Automotive lighting, both exterior and interior, has seen sweeping changes over the last five to ten years with the introduction of LED and OLED technologies. The flexibility of the tech has created many new design possibilities, enabling functional and aesthetic improvements in a number of different ways.
Expand your knowledge within this area, with this exclusive free presentation by Whilk Gonçalves, Head of Innovation in Lighting and Signalization at PSA Group in France on the topic of: "Optimization of pixel light beams".
ADB systems have greatly evolved in the last years from systems using dozens of segments or pixels, towards high definition projectors displaying thousands or millions of pixels, well adapted for symbols projection. We present the PSA Group strategy for optimizing those systems to different levels of complexity, depending on resolution, to different impacts to the car systems (electronics, CAN communication, and projection strategies).
The Presentation focuses on:
• Best Practice Example from PSA
• The potential of ADB systems for vehicle to pedestrian communication
• An holistic analysis of optimized ADB system
Exterior lighting today is highly regulated, putting limits to the exterior lighting designers, as well as engineers. The situation is with interior lighting, where the designers do not face great regulations in the most parts of the world. During the workshop at the Intelligent Automotive Lighting Conference 2019, Victor Loya, Consulting Engineer for automotive lighting products at ANSYS, elaborated on the question if the automotive INTERIOR lighting shall be strictly regulated by the government or automotive agencies just like it is done with the exterior.

Silicone optics have become quite well adopted in high end LED lamps & luminaires lighting applications, such as, e.g., automotive headlamps, outdoor streets, roadways and stadium as well as retails. There are many benefits associated with silicones optics such as, e.g., resistance to high heat and lumen fluxes, stability against UV radiation, high resistance against scratch and impact, good compression set, enhanced optics and free form lenses design capabilities, and opportunities to optimize manufacturing processes of optics at large volume industrial scales.

The interior lighting can be customised, with different colours assigned to different driving modes. In park mode, the model even offers a ‘car show’ mode, whereby changing colours flow outwards from the instrument panel to the rest of the interior. With advances in technologies such as ADAS, and the potential of self-driving cars, interior lighting design is set to become increasingly important, from both a mood and an entertainment perspective.

More lighting features seem to many like additional expense in vehicles that aren’t necessary. Ambient lighting adds to that perception but LEDs and now OLEDs will be a less expensive alternative as they become more standard. LEDs in general use less electricity, weigh less and are more efficient.
